Few days back, while I was surfing Aaron Wall's blog, I came across a great post titled "Holiday SEO". Aaron made few very interesting points, and one pertained to historical research on keywords using Google Trends. Aaron turned his clock back on to December 25th, 2007 on Google Trends, and we decided to turn the clock back on to November 22nd, 2007. See the screenshot below:

Notice Anything?

Its obviously not any secret that keywords like "black friday deals", "black friday online" get the most number of searches and hits during that particular period. Highly competitive, but if you manage to rank well on those then you would - be spiritually enlightened bring loads of money during the thanksgiving period . However, if you look a little deeper, you'll also notice that people are looking for more than just black friday deals.

Take a look at these keywords for instance:

  • "how to make turkey gravy"
  • "how long to cook a turkey"
  • "how to make mashed potatoes"
  • and so on...

Lets take a look at how difficult it is to rank for a keyword like "black friday coupons" versus "how to make turkey gravy"

HolidaySEO

Dificulty: 60

HolidaySEO

Difficulty: 39

Keyword Difficulty tool is a free tool provided by SEOLogs.

Now, if you were to run a holiday promotion site - do you think it'd be valuable and worth your time to get your site ranked on such keywords for long term? Also, most of the good keywords are dominated by sites that have been around for longer than 5+ years, and have an excellent backlink profile. Sad but true, your chances of ranking on terms like "black friday coupons" are much less compared to "how to make turkey gravy".

Now, wouldn't you want to include a section in your site about something like "Thanks Giving Recipes", if you were aiming for "blackfriday" traffic.

As Aaron said in his post - "Don't Wait Until The Last Minute" if you plan on driving traffic to your site through SEO. SEO definitely is a long term process, but it would be definitely better to get natural traffic versus paid traffic on the targeted keywords. Of course, the investment is yours or SEO firm's time.

In my next post, I'll talk about a highly accurate keyword tool that we've been using to build our keyword list. Till then - stay tuned.
